| The Chateau
des Adhémar de Monteil enters the history books in the 11th
century, when the Chevaliers of Grignan ruled the surrounding region
from high up in their strong medieval fortress. By marriages and alliances,
it came into the ownership of a powerful family of the region, the
Monteil family. |
| The medieval
castle fortress was altered for the first time in the 16th century,
then transformed in the 17th century into a luxurious residence by
the illustrious François de Castellane Ornano Adhémar
de Monteil, Duke of Termoli, Count of Grignan and Campobasso, Lieutenant
General to the Sun King in Languedoc then in Provence. Despite a prestigious
career and glorious feats of arms (the taking of Orange and the saving
of Toulon) in the service of Louis XIV, he will remain for posterity
the son-in-law of the Marquise de Sevigne. |
| Badly
damaged during the Revolution, the chateau was patiently restored
by later owners, then acquired by the town of Grignan in 1979. It
has been classed a historic monument since 1993.
