recently restored and housing the town hall. Aside from its ochre activitiy, Rustrel had two steel founderies. Two high furnaces still testify to this past activity. Located in the heart of the village, a "blood mill", that is to say, an olive oil mill driven animal power, was operating up until the 30's. The presses, the capstan, the felter and the cauldron can still be seen, presented in the state they were in at that period. But olive oil is not the only nectar produced in Rustrel: here they also produce Côtes du Ventoux wines.
Gignac, right nearby, is a minuscule hilltop market town with a population of 48. Built at 450 meters altitude and dominated by its château, it is the smallest village in the Vaucluse. Here, time seems to have stopped : no shop, restaurant or hotel has ever opened. Visiting the village gives you an exceptional view over the surrounding sites, and also lets you retrace the history of the spot by following the the names of the streets, named according to local memory. You will find, for example "La Jupière" (the Skirtmaker), thus named because on that spot the strong winds lifted the ladies' skirts…
