Féria of Saint-Rémy de Provence

From August 11 to 15, 2017

In Saint Rémy, the Feria is the big, popular festival of summer. It brings together all the facets of the games involving bulls that exclude the killing of the animal. It's the occasion for a parade when everyone wears the traditional costume but it is above all a series of bull races, running of the bulls, taurine shows and courses camarguaises. A top quality Portuguese bullfight also takes place. In the animated streets, on the café terraces and in the bodegas, people party to the sound of the peñas (traditional brass bands that accompany the bull races).

The Abrivado consists in driving the bulls, encircled by the ranchers on horseback, through the village streets from the ranch to the arena. The public tries to get the bulls to escape the circle of horsemen.

The Encierro is when they let the bulls loose in an enclosed pen in the middle of the village.

The Bandido takes place after the race, when the bulls return from the arena to go back to the trucks.

On August 15, the Feria is also the occasion to watch a true regional tradition: the Carreto Ramado.

This parade is a tradition very specific to the plains of the northern Alpilles since the 19th century. The Carreto Ramado is an enormous float decorated with products of the land and leaves symbolizing the farm produce of Saint Rémy and the region. It is drawn by about fifty draught horses magnificently harnessed in Saracen style one behind the other and led by their cart driver. The Camargue horsemen and the Arlésiennes participate in this tradition. In the morning, the cart parades around the town.
