Archaeological Museum of Nimes

The first museum in Nîmes was created in 1823 in the Maison Carrée. At the end of the 19th century, the City decided to install its lapidary collections in part of the former Jesuits' college located south of the old city, between the Grand Rue and the boulevard Amiral Courbet. The inauguration took place in 1896.
The Archaeological Museum of Nîmes collection is essentially made up of objects of local and regional origins, with the exception of a collection of Greek, Etruscan, and Italiate ceramics coming from the legacies of private collections and a state trust (Campana).
The periods represented are the Iron Age, the Roman era and the Middle Ages.

In 1986, the architect Wilmotte discreetly brought up to date an architecture and facilities too marked by the 19th century. . Combining black metal, halogen lighting and terrazzo, he has enhanced the exhibition spaces and ornaments.
