The Matisse Museum is set out in Nice in the Villa des Arènes, a 17th century Genoese residence situated on the Cimiez Hill not far from the Gallo-Roman ruins and the Hotel Regina where Henri Matisse used to stay.
Since 1963, the museum presents the works bequeathed to the city of Nice by the artist. The vast collection, which includes paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, illustrated books and photographs as well as objects belonging to the artist, retraces Matisse's work and evolution, from his first canvasses up until his death.
