Vaison La Romaine - Tourism in Provence
History

Vaison La Romaine between the Rhone Valley and the Mont Ventoux

When the Romans came, Vaison was the capital of the Voconces, a people of Celtic origin, allied with the Romans. The romanization of the region was then that much easier as the town of "Vasio" benefited from the status of a federate city, which conferred on it notable advantages and privileged relations with Rome.

The city progressively developed over the plain on the right bank of the Ouveze river, erecting numerous and rich residences and public buildings (theaters, baths).

In the Middle Ages, the city was the seat of an important bishopry, then came under the rule of the Count of Toulouse, who built, on the left bank of the Ouveze, the chateau, around which the medieval city grew and which it still dominates today.

Whith the rest of the Comtat (county) Venaissin, the city became the property of the Popes in 1274 until the Revolution.
