leave
nature to it
Christophe
did not wait for Correns to proclaim itself Premier organic village
in France to begin his conversion. Having fallen in love with
this green Provence in 1983, he started working his patch of land
here. In 1991, he chucked away all fertilizers and pesticides.
The act of not treating his cultures demands from him increased
vigilance. Without any particular method, he adapts himself to
his valley. "If a plant is too weak to live without provisions,
I forget about it." He cultivates 2 hectares of land irrigated
by natural springs, and lives part of the year in his blue cabin,
with his wife, a teacher, and his children, far from any civilization.
A donkey, two or three goats, some hens. "You have to provide
the best conditions for the plants, to avoid using curative measures.
But leaving nature to it is not without its consequences. When
something serious happens, we are left looking "silly".
We had an accident with the lettuce one year. I let the animals
loose in the field, they cleaned up everything, and perfectly
enjoyed it." A good lesson in intelligent recycling. But
in Correns, they are only two to practice this type of market
gardening. It's not many for a village that only drinks certified
organic wine. |
