The surroundings ...

Avignon, its monuments and its festival.
As much as theater is the main attraction this world-renowned Festival also offers classical music, exhibitions and dance. The city's superb monuments often provide the stage for the theater shows. An independant, "outsiders" festival, known as Festival Off, takes place at the same time.

Avignon - Bridge - Palace of the Popes
The stree of the Teinturiers in Avignon
Moreover, you can visit the Popes' Palace, built at the beginning of the 14th century, when the Popes left Rome and its reigning anarchy for the relative security of Avignon. It resembles a fortress with its massive walls and soaring towers. Sacked during the Revolution and used as barracks under Napoleon, the palace alas lost at its 15th c. furniture and frescos. It has undergone restoration work since 1906. A visit permits you to discover several rooms, including the banquet hall, the Great Chapel, the Pope's bedroom, and the office of Pope Clement VII.
Palace of the Popes - Avignon Festival
The Saint Benezet Bridge over the Rhone was built between 1177 and 1178, and had at that time 22 arches. It was just wide enough for pedestrians and horses, and although the famous song says "one danced upon it ', it was actually under the bridge where the dancing took place. Most of the bridge was swept away in 1668 by one of the periodic and violent upsurges of the river. Today only four arches and a small chapel remain, on the Avignon side.
Vaison la Romaine - Medieval city
Vaison-la-Romaine and the Roman ruins
The Roman ruins of Vaison cover thirteen hectares. Despite damage from the 1992 food, the site merits a visit. You will discover a small Roman Theater, columns, patrician villas, one of which, the "house of the silver bust", is thirty times the size of a present day dwelling. In the Villasse quarten you can visit the Home of the Mesiif, a wealthy family of the time. It has high columns and a mosaic floor. We can clearly distinguish the different rooms : atrium, baths, toilets and kitchen. On the site, an excellent museum exhibits numerous finds from archeological digs, such as marble statues of Hadrian, and his wife Sabine, Tiberius and Caligula.

And many more treasures of Provence...
