Roussillon and the northen surroudings
Discover Sénanque
and its Cistercian abbey isolated at the bottom of a valley. Open
to the public, a dozen monks still live their and cultivate the
earth.
You will want to stop in the medieval village of Gordes,
famous for its Bories village : a group of dry stone constructions
classed as a historic monument since 1977.
Roussillon : perched on a hill, the village reveals
on its façades the multitude of ochre varieties that have
been found in the ground here.
Don't miss a visit to the Conservatory of Ochre and Applied Pigments.

Roussillon and its northeast surroundings
Leaving from the village of Rustrel,
you can visit the "Colorado Provençal"
which remains the jewel of the Luberon Park.
Over a distance of 9 kms, you will discover ochre quarries and magnificent
panoramas such as that of the "cheminées de fées"
("the fairies' fireplace") |
Roussillon and its southern surroundings
A tour of the "Petit Luberon"
and its hilltop villages will let you discover Oppède-le-Vieux,
Ménerbes and its citadel, Lacoste and the ruins of the chateau
of the Marquis de Sade, Bonnieux, and Lourmarin, its 15th century
chateau towering above.
Continuing to Puyvert, Lauris, Puget and its olive orchards, and
Mérindol you will be surrounded by all the Provençal
flora and fauna.
To the southeast of Roussillon, leaving from the village of Buoux,
you can start your tour of the "Grand Luberon".
In Buoux you can visit the chateau of the environment, then, going
by the Prieuré St Symphorien, head for Cabrières d'Aigues
which was one of the first villages to be a victim of the crusades
against the Waldensians in the 16th century.
You can continue your tour with a visit to Ansouis and its chateau,
passing through Grambois which was one of the twelve fortresses
of Provence, before returning, by way of Apt and tasting its famous
candied fruit, to Roussillon. |
