The
Coulon family, wine makers for seven generations, |
Domaine
de Beaurenard, in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, has been a family-owned estate
for seven generations. Paul, Regine and their two sons, Daniel and Frederic,
now run the vineyard with passion...The domain has 30 hectares of land in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 25 hectares in Rasteau, where the Cotes-du-Rhone and Cotes-du-Rhone Villages RASTEAU are produced. Faithful to the old adage, "To make good wine, you need good grapes", the harvest at Beaurenard is carried out entirely by hand. For this, each grape picker is given two buckets and as they pick, separate the finest bunches from those that are damaged or unripe. The fully mature grapes are taken to the vat room in small crates to avoid crushing the seeds which would cause oxidisation and affect their quality. Manual work means that the vines can remain productive for up to 90 years. In years where the weather conditions are difficult, we do not hesitate to eliminate 20 % of the production so as not to affect the high quality of our wines. The stringent selection policy enhances the wines colour, bouquet, taste and digestibility, and ensures a product of consistent, well-monitored quality, regardless of the whims of nature. Ageing in oak barrels, and/or tanks, allows the wine to clarify and the tannins to develop. Regular tasting mean that the best moment can be chosen to bottle the wine. Once bottled, the bottles are stocked in underground cellars (7kms below ground level), before being dispatched throughout France, Europe, America or Asia. |
