| The
site of Montbrun was already occupied in the prehistoric era. Many
vestiges attest to the Roman presence. During the Middle Ages, the
village and its feudal fortress belonged successively to the great
families of the region.
During the wars of religion, Montbrun was the stronghold of Charles
Dupuy-Montbrun, the audacious war leader heading the Protestant
troops. He took many cities and towns in the region and carried
out many cruel acts. He conquered a large part of Dauphine region,
before being captured and beheaded in 1575 in Grenoble, and his
chateau was razed.
