The plateau of Valensole

Fields of lavender and wheat in the Alpes de Haute Provence

A SEA OF LAVENDER AND WHEAT

A vast sea of shingles amassed several hundred meters thick, the plateau of Valensole is the realm of durum wheat and hybrid lavender.

Lavender blue and gold in the beginning of summer, russet and gray in the midst of winter, its colours change with the seasons.

The geometric alignment of the fields, their borders accentuated by almond trees, the cubes formed by small woods, the villages in the valleys sheltered from the Mistral wind make up a sort of French-style garden stretching as far as the eye can see.

This landscape, one of the most spectacular in Provence, owes its beauty to the work of Man.

The Gallo-Roman civilization left its mark everywhere: temple, basilica, baptistery in Riez, thermal baths in Gréoux les Bains.

The agriculture and the craftworks, notably art, present since Antiquity, still represent most of the activities on the plateau.
