The project «the workshops of the Mediterranean»
It aims to make Marseille a European hub of cultural exchange and cooperation in all artistic and cultural disciplines involving the players and countries of the Mediterranean. It will promote young creators and young researchers. It will be formed of a federation of existing and forthcoming establishments and events in Marseille-Provence. "The workshops of the Mediterranean" will take place within each and all of them. This federation will be created on a permanent basis and its activities will continue well beyond 2013.

Welcoming
Artists, scholars, creators of cities and landscapes, coming from the South and from the North, will be invited to Marseille-Provence, every year, year-round, to work, communicate and dialogue. The means to accommodate them and their activities will be organized within the region's cultural establishments and enterprises. Some institutions will have the capacity amongs themselves to constitutue veritable cultural centres. In this regard, the economic world will mobilize itself to propose an artists' residences programme that will be employed starting in 2009. |
Transmitting
The Marseille-Provence project is a project for the young.
Marseille cannot aspire to be a Euro-Mediterranean metropolis in the long term without offering a powerful response to the challenge of passing on culture to the young. Advances in ways of thinking, the revitalization of forms of, and the exploration of new spaces for, expression come about from an examination of inspiration, knowledge, experience. We will invite masters in all the disciplines from the South and from the North. We will invite young creators to meet these experts, to work with them, and communicate with them as much on a South-South as a South-North basis. |
Linking transmission to creation
"The workshops of the Mediterranean" will be conceived in a way to provide support, through training courses and symposiums, to creative projects that will be produced and presented at the different events - exhibitions, performances, festivals - in the years that follow. A specific commissioning policy will be implemented. Particular attention will be given to new creative writing, to music, to popular and urban forms of expressions and to artistic documentaries. |
The two axes of the project
"The workshops of the Mediterranean" will take on the themes of the reassessment of public spaces and art's place in these spaces.
Bringing together artists and practitioners of urban science, they will deal with artistic nomadism, the mobility of the woks and the cultural irrigation of the different regions. Residents will participate in these cultural projects in developing practices amongst amateurs, notably within schools. Contemporary creation, especially creation by the young, brings social openness and bonds. Artistic practices are today more and more in tune with local and social challenges, combining the artistic, educational and social dimensions. In this new relationship with the public, creators structure and animate the indispensable, and often sole, centres of freedom, above all in the countries of the South shores. |
Combining artistic with intellectual and scientific works
"The workshops of the Mediterranean" will give support to exchanges and encounters between professors and students, scholars and artists, in liaison with universities and research institutions, centered on some of the greater themes of the European capital of culture project. Seminars and colloquia will be organized around these themes; grants will be awarded to help some of the work of artists and researchers. |
