The terroir at the Domaine Paul Autard is made up for the most part of sand and rounded shingles. Situated between Courthézon and Chateauneuf du Pape, it benefits from a variety of geographic spots and exposures particularly favorable to the complexity of the wines.
The vines vary from 40 to 95 years old, the wine "Côte Ronde" coming from a parcel of 90 year old grapevines planted in a terroir of rounded shingles and blocks of fossilized limestone. The main grape varieties are Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Muscardin for the reds, and Clairette, Roussanne and White Grenache for the white wines

Thinning out the leaves lets in more sunshine and allows for the vines' good health. Removal of unessential shoots allows for the aeration of the vines (thus the grape), as well concentrating the berry to bring out the terroir with more precision.

Using neither insecticides nor chemical fertillizers, Jean-paul Autard has an attitude resolutely turned towards a respect for balance in nature and biodiversity.
