The Var in France, a region to discover ! |
Our Bed & Breakfast Le Mas de Cocagne in Saint Antonin du Var, is located at the crossroads of the three main regions of the Var (France) :
1° the coast, a very sea oriented region with its coastline and beaches. Towns like Saint Raphaël, Saint Tropez, Bormes les Mimosas, Le Lavandou, Fréjus and Toulon can give you hundreds of examples of the joys of the sea and are the promised land for water sports.
2° the upper Var (France) - the Verdon natural park. The region of the Verdon hides in its gorges and summits, nature preserved. Throughout this largest canyon in Europe and paradise for climbers, there reigns a breathtaking beauty and silence. The surrounding areas offer walkers and hikers many well-marked trails.
The nature gourmets will also be delighted : besides the honey and a reputable olive oil, the red earth and white oaks produce rare and flavourful truffles that you can find in the market of Aups, from November to March.
3° the Var Provence - Beyond the roads, hills appear, heavy with olive trees, scrub land, the well-ordered rows of grapevines, and a village (like Flayosc), murmuring with fountains where time seems to flow slower than the water.
The Provence of the Var lives gently from West to East, following the verdant valley of the Argens. To the west, there is the region of Saint Maximin and the massif of the Sainte Baume, where a forest spreads out with the oldest beeches and yews in France. To the East of the valley, Fréjus, the "Provençal Pompeii" has one of the most beautiful Roman amphitheaters. Along this itinerary, names full of history and richness are dotted about : Tourves and the 14th century Valbelle chateau, Barjols, the town of 33 fountains, Brignoles, the city of the Counts of Provence, Fox Amphoux, the old village perched on its hilltop, the Thoronet Abbey, one of the 3 Cistercian sisters of Provence and its nieghbour the château of Entrecasteaux, Draguignan, Le Luc, Fayence, Tourtour "the village in the sky"... The Valley of the Argens gives you a hundred occasions to take the time to venture here, in a kayak, on a bicycle or horseback, and walking or hiking in the history and nature of the Provençal Var. |
Main events in the Var
The Var teems with ideas all year round. There is a continuous celebration of emotions and surprises. Music, dance, theatre, sports, original soirees, performances... And a theatre piece in the beautiful vineyards followed by a Provençal supper, that's the Var. Dozens of jazz festivals next to those of medieval music, that's also the Var. The fun board world cup, automobile races in Castellet, modern dance, traditional fetes like the grape harvest festival, that's still the Var. The true nature of diversity ! All these events are listed in the 2 guides "Le Var en fête" summer and winter, which you can obtain at the Comité Départemental du Tourisme. |
Hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking
More than half the department is wooded, with ideal weather all year round and 1600km of walking and hiking paths, 500 of which can be used by horseback riders and mountain bikes : lovers of scrub land and trees will be delighted. Add to all that the kilometers of "customs trails" that make its way up and down the coast. Few regions bring together as many favourable conditions and as many form of rambling and trekking as in the Verdon, the mountains of the Ste Baumes, the Esterel and Les Maures.
