The Popes in Avignon

Pope Gregoire XI - Pope in Avignon from 1370 to 1378
(Pierre Rogier de Beaufort)

Pope Gregoire XI
Author : Henri Segur
Exposed in The Popes' Palace

A nephew of Clement VI, he promotes the crusade that will stop the infidels. He even wants to return the papacy to Rome, propitious to his project. He announces his departure for the beginning of 1375 but delays it for lack of money for the trip. He also wants to first put an end to the war between France and England. The disappointment is so great in Italy that the pontifical states revolt. Finally on October 2, I376, he leaves Marseille. After a terrible crossing and a difficult trip he arrives in Rome on January 17 of the next year. Exhausted by the journey and ill-supporting the climatical rigors of Italy, he dies in the Vatican on March 27, 1378.
