Avignon's museums


Avignon has several museums, certain of which have quite well renowned collections. Visiting some of them will let you discover part of their treasures.

The Collection Lambert
Museum of Contemporary Art of Avignon The Collection Lambert proposes five zones within the 2000 m² of the museum : exhibitions, preventive conservation, activities targeting young viewers, the museum bookshop and artists' editions and the restaurant situated in the hôtel particulier's courtyard.

The Maison Jean Vilar
The Maison Jean Vilar in Avignon The Maison Jean Vilar, founded in 1979, is the depository of the work of the Avignon Theatre Festival's creator, and testifies to his contribution to contemporary theatre. The Maison Jean Vilar inscribes its actions in the larger context of the performing arts by putting at the public's disposal the services of a video library and a reference library.

The Calvet Museum
The most famous of Avignon's museums, it was founded in 1810, by the collector Esprit Calvet. Recently restored, you will find a sumptuous collection of 17th and 18th century paintings, a collection of 14th and 15th century wrought iron works, as well as many other pieces.

The Angladon Museum
Le musée Angladon à Avignon In the Angladon museum you will discover a rich art collection with some of the most prestigious signatures (Cezanne, Modigliani, Picasso, Manet, Degas, Vernet, Van Gogh,...) and you will see the private home of the art lovers who inherited them.

The Louis Vouland Museum
Le musées Louis Vouland The Louis Vouland Arts Decorative Museum has the subtle seduction of the last century's mansion, opening on a lovely garden. Its interior is remarkable for the luxurious display of lavish furnishings and master pieces collected in his lifetime by a generous patron, and mostly dedicated to the 18th century.

The Museum of the Petit Palais
Since 1976, the Petit Palais houses a large collection of Italian Primitive paintings. These works, some of which are really exceptional, were collected by the Marquis Giampietro Campana di Cavelli of Rome in the 19th century, then bought by Napoleon III

The Museum of old Avignon
The museum is set up in the Popes Palace. It presents objects from the Middle Ages, as well as many engravings that depict life at that period and the transformations in Avignon over the years. The museum is part of the Palace tour.

The Requien Museum
Musée Avignon The museum of natural history is in the former Saint Martial convent; Jean-Henri Fabre had been the curator. Named after its founder, the Requien museum is rich in paleontological, mineralogical and botanical collections. It is also a naturalist research center.

The Palais du Roure
Musée Avignon The Palais du Roure, or Hotel de Baroncelli, dates from the 15th century and is one of the most beautiful former town residences in Avignon. At the beginning of the century it hosted the active club of the Felibrige movement, a revival of Provencal literary culture. Today it houses a Provencal and archaeological resource center and a museum of popular arts and traditions.

Musée Avignon

The archives of Avignon, the city's memory, are located in the Mont de Piete (formerly a type of pawnbrokers) the oldest in France, et la Condition des Soies, in charge of regulating silk production.
