Histoire
The Village of Uchaud, in Provence

The village was built along the Via Domitia, which linked Italy to Spain. This road was used essentially by the Roman Legions and for trade. Starting from the main milestone, the Porte Auguste in Nîmes, it was marked out based on the length of a Roman legionnaire's step and every 1000 paces they set up a marker. At 8000 Roman paces from the southwest exit of Nîmes, it was decided to set up a staging post, which took the name "Ad Octavum", "au huitième" or "at the eighth". It's from the successive deformations of the word "octavum", the 8, that we have the present day name of Uchaud.
