In the 13th century, the archbishops of Arles owned a flour mill at Pont Royal, in the hamlet of Mallemort.
In 1400, the Damian family, one of the most noble Provençal families became the proprietors of the building constructed on its ruins.
In the 16th century, a descendant of this family, holding the title of "Ladyship of Vernègues" married the marquis Jean de Sade.
Following the French revolution, the building was used as a coaching inn.
Transformed into a manor house, it welcomed a number of prestigious guests.
A century later, the house passed into the hands of the Carthusian Monks of Bonpas, whose crest is engraved on the pediment of the fountain in the courtyard and on the mantelpiece of the fireplace in the Great Salon.
